This FOD floor tape comes in three styles and colors, yellow, red, and blue, conforming to standard FOD zone designations:
- FOD AWARENESS AREA (blue floor tape), where FOD has a low potential to impact safety or productivity, but is still a matter of concern. Staff and visitors must adhere to the facility’s basic FOD control procedures and practice common-sense housekeeping and item accountability. Unescorted access may or may not be restricted to personnel trained in FOD control.
- FOD CONTROL AREA (yellow floor tape), where FOD has a medium potential to impact safety or productivity. In addition to adhering to basic FOD control procedures, there will be additional procedures to follow. Unescorted access may or may not be restricted to personnel trained in FOD control.
- FOD CRITICAL AREA (red floor tape), where FOD has a high potential to impact safety or productivity. Staff and visitors must adhere to the facility’s strictest FOD control and prevention procedures. Unescorted access is most likely to be restricted to personnel trained in FOD control.

FOD Zone™ Marking Tape Application Instructions
FOD Zone™ Marking Tape can be applied on almost any interior industrial floor surface – concrete, tile, linoleum, or metal, including painted or plated finishes. It is not recommended for outside application on asphalt surfaces.
To achieve ultimate adhesion, the bonding surfaces should be dry, clean and free of dirt and oils. To apply the tape, first clean the floor with a mild non-ammonia or non-solvent based cleaner such as Simple Green. Solvent or ammonia-based cleaners can damage the adhesive layer of the tape. Make sure the floor is completely dry, then simply peel and stick the tape to the floor.
The tape can be applied by hand or with the help of a floor tape applicator, which allows a single worker to apply tape lines quickly and helps avoid bubbles or uneven application. Some people like to use a chalk line when installing to make certain the lines are straight. Once the tape is laid down, it is a good idea to run a weighted wheel over the tape lines to press them firmly onto the surface and obtain good adhesive to surface contact. The strength of the adhesion bond is dependent on the amount of surface area directly contacting the adhesive.
If it is ever necessary to remove or replace tape, the recommended procedure is to loosen one end with a mechanical scraper, then pull the tape away from the floor, continuing to assist with the scraper as needed. It may be helpful to wind the old tape onto a roll such as a wooden dowel or a section of pipe or conduit. It is not recommended to use solvents or heat as these methods can spread the rubber-based adhesive out and make it difficult to remove adhesive residues from the floor.
In the event a section of tape gets damaged, it is possible to remove and replace only the damaged area.
- First, use a straight edge and cut thru the tape on either side of the damaged section, avoiding the printed text areas for best results. A sharp razor knife like a box-cutter is recommended for this step.
- Next, use a scraper to help peel and remove the damaged section as described above. Carefully check to make sure the floor area is clean and free from debris or oil and grease. Clean if necessary – Make sure the floor is dry before proceeding.
- Cut a replacement section of tape from a new roll of tape that matches the color and text spacing of the damaged area. Allow a couple of inches of extra tape on each end of the new splice section for handling and trimming.
- Carefully align the new section, making sure it is straight and the color and text spacing match the original.
- Overlap slightly at each end with the pre-cut original tape sections.
- Beginning in the center, lightly smooth out the replacement section, making sure to remove air
- bubbles while maintaining the alignment. Do not fully press into place yet.
- At the splice point on each end of the replacement tape section, lightly overlap the original tape.
- Using the sharp razor knife or box-cutter and straightedge, carefully cut thru both layers of tape – new plus original – on each end.
- Carefully remove the excess piece of replacement tape and lift the new splice section back while scraping away and peeling up the stub piece of original tape.
- Return the newly spliced section to position and press in place. This should produce a nearly seamless joint.
- Using a pressure roller, fully go over the new section of tape and the splice area to make sure the adhesive layer is fully pressed against the floor surface.
